Hello Everybody,

We've certainly had a good season this year, both for our suntans, and for the progress of the Free Beach Group. The filming by Heritage Video provided a flurry of extra activity for many of us. We thank ail those members who turned up for the filming, and regret that due to a last-minute hitch, it Was not possible to film at the sauna. Media coverage was excellent, both on TV and in the newspaper. I was impressed with David Ball's comments on our local nudist scene, and have reprinted these articles on a separate sheet.

In Hastings, the President of the Hawkes Bay Sun Club, Edna Barnes, has asked the Hastings District Council to designate a part of Ocean Beach for nudist use, and we believe that a portion of the beach is being marked off. In Christchurch, where there is no nudity bylaw, our members have been going onto any suitable beach, and may yet prove to be the ones to demonstrate that it is society, not laws or bylaws, that dictates the acceptance of nudity on beaches.

Looking back over our Auckland Diary, I note that the weather was kind to us for our beach day at Waiheke - cloudy in the city, but fine and warm over there.

Tawharanui was a good weekend. There is always plenty to do there. We walked for miles along the beach, collected rooks, sunbathed, and swam in the big gentle rollers and. crystal clear water, just the way I like it. In the evening we explored a track through the bush.

I also enjoyed our Wainamu trip. We tried. the track from the Cascades, and found three beautiful waterfalls with deep swimming pools - yes, I couldn't resist a quick dip!

Both Orpheus Bay and St. Leonard's Beach have been popular for most of us, and St. Leonard's promises to be the best beach for winter sunbathing. It is sheltered from the southerlies, and the sun reflects off the white cliffs, so it can get quite hot there.

A good crowd of us turned up at Uretiti for Easter, and a few other nudists were there as well, including some from the Waikato Outdoor Society. The weather stayed fine, with high cloud and a light breeze. The highlights of the weekend were a great night at a 'sing-song' held by a motorhome club, and an invitation to a barbecue of two 'sheep-on-a-spit' arranged by a group of campers.

COUNTRY CORNER

We welcome all our new members, especially those in Kaitaia, one of my favourite towns. I hope someone will step forward and offer to arrange some outings. You have lots of beautiful beaches to choose from.

Several Bay of Plenty members enjoyed an impromptu beach day at Brian and Wendy's place at Opoutere recently.

I appreciate having newspaper articles sent in for reprinting in our newsletters. If you see anything in your local paper about nudism or free beaches, could you please tear out the whole page, and post it in to us? The heading at the top of the page is needed for copyright purposes.

Our Sunday night saunas have become more popular since Daylight Saving ended. Everything is good and hot, and you're assured of a warm welcome.

RICCARD'S

The swim night last month was well attended, and these evenings will continue through May and June, but not in July or August. So come along to the Parakai Tourist Complex on the last Friday night of each month, 6 - 10 p.m. Adults $4.50, children $2.80. Restaurant and takeaways on the premises. This is the last pool complex on your left as you go through Parakai.

SWIMARAMA

Swimarama will be closed for renovations until September. The roof is being rebuilt, the pools and foyer upgraded, and a fitness centre and hydrotherapy spa are planned for the old changing room area. We have decided against hiring any other pool, as they are either too expensive, or have glass walls.

VIDEO

The video "Let's Get It All Off - For Goodness Sake!" is still available to members. Please send $5 to cover postage and packing. Please return it promptly.

OVERSEAS TRIPPERS

A number of members are travelling overseas during the winter. We hope you enjoy your holidays, and wish you a safe journey home.

CAMPING MISHAP

Ken and Gladys Knudsen are recovering in Whangarei Hospital after an accident in their caravan at Tinopai. Mice had gnawed a hose connection from the gas bottle to the fridge and it flared up, burning Ken all down his front - luckily he was wearing underpants! Gladys received burns to her legs. I spoke to Ken on the phone, and he cheerfully told me that he had always wanted a ride in a helicopter! We send them our best wishes, and hope they will soon be out and about again.

WELLINGTON DISTRICT NEWSLETTER

MAY - JUNE 1990

Well here we are at the "May - June Newsletter", though this 'copy' for the Wellington contribution is being prepared at the end of March.

Right now I am in my private garden wearing only my 1989-90 summer suntan! The summer sun is beaming down from a cloudless central New Zealand blue sky and the day is warm and pleasant. However it must be realised that give or take a few weeks, the short mid-winter days will be all too evident; and when that time is reached we will have the forth-coming new 1990-91 summer season to look forward to.

For the Wellington District members, the important and really worthwhile "dates" these last two months have been the monthly official group fixtures at Pekapeka Beach, Fitzroy Bay and Breaker Bay, this last venue proving to be a locality more and more used by not only the Free Beach Group and single males, but growing numbers of couples and family groups.

It should be acknowledged that the Wellington FBG members (lead by Frank) have been responsible this summer for coaxing, by positive actions and attitudes, more and more nude beach users at Breaker Bay to establish personal rendezvous several chains closer to the carpark end of the beach. Alas, Frank is shortly to again live in Europe, but his inducement to locate himself unabashedly 'week-in and week-out' far closer to the marine drive end and carpark entrance to Breaker Bay, will have us remember him by referring in the future to his personal rendezvous, about halfway between the rock outcrop tunnel and the hill pathway, as "Frank's Place". May I take this opportunity to thank you, Frank, on behalf of the group, for your initiative within the group, and we wish you well in your European 'world of the future'.

In late February a considerable number of us, lead by Geoff, had a very enjoyable tramp and river picnic/swim experience in the Otaki Forks River region. A Fielding member even made it down for the day!

Sunday 11th March (the Sunday following the Taranaki floods), saw a number of us at Breaker Bay "starring" in the Heritage Video film on nudism in N.Z. Those of us that made this 'date' appreciate that the film/video tape sequences David Ball was able to take may not actually be used in the final compilation, but our involvement that day was fun not to be forgotten.

Sunday 18th March, at quite short notice (and with thanks to Trevor for his valuable assistance in regard to "Contact" press-release needs being met), the Wellington Free Beach Group staged an Open Day at Breaker Bay. Another truly lovely summer day was ours to enjoy (a common experience for us this summer), and close on thirty folk clustered around the Fred Bear flag at 'Frank's Place'. Time will tell if the upwards of ten or more positive phone enquiries I received will generate new members - certainly some of those who turned up at the beach arranged to pay their subs for the current year. We welcome aboard those new members. Perhaps here in the Wellington District, next summer's Open Day will/should be arranged to take place earlier in the season?

STOP PRESS: News has just come to hand of our first "SWIM NIGHT", to be held on SUNDAY 29 APRIL, from 6pm to 8pm, at the Cannons Creek Aquatic Centre. Barbecue facilities. Admission charge was $4 per adult last year, could be a little more this year. School students free.

South Auckland Newsletter

Although there are not many members in South Auckland, we haven't been completely inactive. What a marvellous summer it has been for sunning and swimming, remembering, all the time, that Factor 15 - or preferably 25 - and a hat are necessary adjuncts to all our nudist activities.

Ngaere and I have whiled away the time in our private garden, cooling down in our sparkling pool, and entertaining other nudists with long days of swimming and sunning, accompanied by delicious lunches and appetising barbecued dinners. The first of these occurred when Eileen and Neil, newcomers to the district, were guests for lunch early in January. Shortly after this a couple from the South Auckland Sun Club invited us to a delightful barbecue on their club grounds, and we were able to see the vast improvement since our last visit ten years ago. What an achievement!

A return visit to our place was soon arranged, where Peter and Gail (S.A.S.C.) joined Pat and Tony (FBG and A.S.C.) around the pool for a fabulous nude day, ending with us all watching a replay of Kiri Te Kanawa's magnificent Auckland concert.

Another evening was spent viewing three videos: "Let's Get It All Off - For Goodness Sake", "Educating Julie" and "Once We Were Naked". The first we found rather 'holier than thou'; the second really entertaining, as well as being good nudist propaganda; and the third a very interesting view of nudism in South Africa.

In between times, other nudists have dropped in for a cup of coffee and. a swim, and we have also spent several very pleasant days at Orpheus Bay.

On March 4th a trip to Dynamite Bay was arranged, mostly by telephone. We met at Kawakawa Bay at 10.30, and after ambling around the rocks for about forty minutes, came at last to Dynamite Bay. It was a very calm day and nicely warm, though cloudy most of the time. All of us went for several swims, and while sunning ourselves on the sand, had, in addition to the lovely islands, a view of the aeronautic display taking place at Ardmore - not very far away as the crow flies. A local run-about and water-skiers provided us with more to look at, and later, this group also stripped off and cavorted at the other end of the beach. Altogether a very successful day!

We hope that the rest of the FBG members have had as great a summer as we have had. In March we set off for a three month tour of England via Perth, where Bob Unwin, one of our own FBG members, has volunteered to show us a little of the local scene. In England we also have contacts, and on returning, plan to visit Canada.

Chch News

MAY - JUNE 1990

MAY - JUNE 1990

Recently, a few of us have tried, as an experiment, skinny dipping on any local beach on the spur of the moment, so to speak. We are sure of ourselves! When it comes to bathing and swimming, you can't beat "au naturel". Genuine skinny-dippers are, in our experience, tolerated or ignored by passing joggers and dog-walkers.

Looking back on a very interesting and enjoyable summer, I think we have made great progress. Let me put it in rhyme:

Professor Marcus Quintus with his wife and cousin Flo,

Set off to take a walk one day along the beach, and lo!

They had a sudden notion,

To plunge into the ocean,

"In puris naturalibus" - the only way to go.

There is just a chance that I might get to the World Congress in Zurich at the end of August, as I am off to Europe shortly to visit relatives, and will be back in time for spring in the Southern Hemisphere. In the meantime, Wilf has offered to act as co-ordinator. His phone number is 596-143. Please let him know if you have any ideas about a winter programme.

In reply to my last month's limerick, Harold has burst into rhyme with two poems regarding his recent North Island experiences:

Some 40 or so,

That I didn't know,

Swam and fished on the beach so secluded.

The notice board dim

Said "No fishing No swim."

"Confiscating these things" clothes included.

Said the constable clear,

"Now now look you here,

With out clothes on it's terribly naughty."

"We have evidence there,

You were fishing and bare;

Now the judge can deal with you forty."

Enroute Waihi, Reporoa

Called in to swim Papamoa,

Found no body there,

That knew Freddie Bear

So my 'bearing' was little bit slower.

(From: "Limericks and Other Silly Poems" by Maunder.)

How sad! Here is something to even things up:

A dame by the name of Jay T,
Went often to swim in the sea.
When folks said, "It's rare
To go totally bare",
She replied, "It is normal to me".

My thanks to everyone who has contributed to the success and enjoyment of FBG and especially to Adrianne in Auckland who keeps the whole show going.

Joyce
