MARCH- APRIL 1990

Dear Friends,

I wish you all a Happy New Year, and I hope you are enjoying the summer as much as I am. The highlight for me has been my trip to Wellington, and meeting the local FBG folk. Debbie and I explored the sights, and visited all the local free beaches. We rather liked Wellington, and spent a whole afternoon riding in the train!

Our Christmas camp at Uretiti went off well again, with quite good weather, good fishing, and lots of people calling in. One new member, who joined on the spot, could hardly tear himself away to go back to work.

Ngatuhoa was a great success once again. Forty-nine adults and seven children attended, some from as far away as Whangarei, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, and a contingent from Wellington. Nice to have you! We did a lot of tramping, and discovered a "new" waterfall. They have put signs on the walking tracks, which made it easier to find our way about. The weather was kind to us most of the time, but it did manage to rain on our regatta! I must gently chide all those FBG members who went to Papamoa Beach on 29 January - all incognito - apparently nobody took a flag!

Our Open Day at St. Leonards was another great success, particularly for the interest and publicity it generated. Fran's telephone was red-hot for several days. Thank you, Fran, and also your daughter, for coping with the deluge. The scene at the beach would have delighted the early pioneers of free beaching, especially Emiel Roland. His dream, his vision, has become a reality. I counted about three hundred people on the beach, more than half of them naked. A real 'clothing-optional' beach.

ADOPT A BEACH CAMPAIGN: The prize goes to Wellington FBG who have 'adopted' Breaker Bay.

Well done! Greenpeace reports a wave of enthusiasm for the campaign. In two months, an estimated three to four thousand people have volunteered to clean and survey beaches all around the country. People are concerned and angry over he pollution of our beaches and the consequent danger to marine wildlife. They can see for themselves the increasing amount of rubbish, especially plastic rubbish, and want to do something constructive before the problem becomes unsurmountable. If you would like to take part in this campaign, we can supply application forms.

NATIONAL ARCHIVES: NZNF Archivist Lee Olsen is collecting old nudist magazines and club

newsletters, and would be grateful for contributions. Please offer him anything you have before you throw them away. Contact Les on 09-444-5015, or write to Les Olsen, 43 Totaravale Drive, Glenfield, Auckland 10.

SAUNA: EVERY SUNDAY at Alladin's Bathhouse, 433 Richmond Road, Grey Lynn, from 5 p.m.

Cost $6.50 each. Coffee, tea and fruit drinks available free.

SOCIAL NIGHTS: 11 March and 8 April. BYO and a plate of goodies.

RESTAURANT DINNERS: Occasional restaurant dinners are held after the sauna on a Sunday night. For information, phone John or Fran on 565-219.

RICCARD'S: Swim nights held at the Parakai Tourist Complex on the last Friday of the month, 6 - 10 p.m. Dates: 23 February, 30 March and 27 April. Adults $4.50, children $2.80. This is the last pool complex on the left as you go through Parakai. Restaurant and takeaways available on the premises. Hosts: Hibiscus Coast Sun Club.

OVERSEAS MEMBERS: We have decided to add postal charges onto overseas subscriptions. For USA and Canada: Sub $NZ18, towel $NZ16 and tee shirt $NZ20. For Australia: Sub $NZ14, towel $NZ12 and tee shirt $NZ16. The prices of other items remain the same as for New Zealand.

COUNTRY CORNER: Everything is very quiet out there - how are you all? Making the most of

the summer, I hope. I passed through some of your towns on my trip to Wellington, and I wondered why the Marine Parade at Napier is not on our beach
list, as is its counterpart in Gisborne. Perhaps Napier members could let me know if this long stretch of beach is used by local nudists.

Bay of Plenty members need another local organiser to help David. Is anyone willing? We will give you every assistance to get a local programme going.

AUSTRALIAN SUN & HEALTH: The Jan - March 1990 issue of this magazine contains an article

about Uretiti, including photographs of some of us.
An order form is included. with this newsletter.

Queensland nudists
want ban stripped

BRISBANE

LEGAL nude bathing on Queensland beaches would boost Australia's tourist industry, the Far North Queensland Free Beach Association said yesterday.

Association president Clemens Vermeulen said nude bathing was very popular in England and Europe and some resorts catered for up to 50,000 skinny-dippers a year.

"Many of these people would love to come to Australia and especially Queensland because they think of it as a Pacific paradise, their tropical dream."

Mr Vermeulen, a bread vendor from Holland who has lived in Australia since 1966, said he would go to Europe to orgainse charter flghts for nudists.

"I would have no trouble filling them," he said.

His association has written to Premier Wayne Goss seeking a moratorium on police action against nude bathers.

"This would allow local authorities arid the general public to assess the issue away from the pressures of police harassment and court charges." Mr Vermeulen said.

Nudism is flourishing in Queensland, with 50 nude beaches spread along the coast. Though they are all illegal, several are tolerated by local authorities.

Police raids at the popular Buchan's Beach, north of Cairns, have made prominent news items over the years.

Last September, three people appeared in Cairns Magistrate's Court charged under the Vagrants, Gaming and Other Offences Act, which carries a maximum penalty of S100. - NZPA-AAP

WELLINGTON DISTRICT NEWSLETTER

At the outset, and as the current Wellington Area Contact/Organiser, I feel two separate emphases associated with our local membership have signs of developing. Certainly as a result of a significant number of FBG members in Wellington District being brought together in early spring at the Swim Nights at the Aquatic Centre in Porirua East, it was then unanimously felt that the restoration of a Wellington/lower North Island structured programme of events and venues was a must. With this in mind, plus the need to provide "dates" for all Wellington members to get to know each other, a Wellington District Diary, covering sixteen weeks of high summer, was specially circulated by post from headquarters in Auckland; our thanks to Adrianne for her prompt assistance in this regard.

In mid January I issued an amended Diary to extend to the first week in April, and active local Wellington and all Wairarapa members received copies. This latter appendage to the original diary was brought about as a result of a get-together generously organised by Trevor and Odette at their home on Friday evening 12 January. A specially decorated cake featuring Fred Bear graced this occasion - praise to Trevor and Odette. At this worthwhile gathering a consensus was reached to have the group use Breaker Bay on a regular basis, this location having been used as the nude/dress optional beach in Wellington central for many years, thus the Free Beach Group should exercise a high profile and substantiate this fact. Added to which there is easy access - no long distance to carry gear etc., and plus the Wellington FBG has recently 'adopted' Breaker Bay in the Greenpeace 'Adopt-a-beach' campaign. Praise to Frank in regard to this outcome, and to Grant for drawing our attention to this nationwide campaign.

In the amended/extended Diary beginning Sunday 14 January, Breaker Bay as a venue is set down eight times officially, but Pekapeka, another long-standing Wellington District nude/dress optional beach retains it's earlier-on monthly fixture date, the second Sunday in the month, with the third Sunday in the month should the weather on the second Sunday prove unsuitable.

NUDIST FILM OF NEW ZEALAND

On Sunday 11 March, Heritage Films will be at Pekapeka to film a beach day.

This is the company that made the films "Educating Julie", "Naked Africa", "Winter in Holland", and the "Naked USA" series. They are spending a month in New Zealand filming at sun clubs and free beaches.

Naturism in New Zealand is seldom featured in overseas articles and reports, and the film will be used to promote our nudist activities.

PLEASE BE PRESENT. Distance shots only if you are shy, but we must have a good turn-out to make a good impression. Video copies of the film will be available to FBG members.

In beginning this W'gton Newsletter, I expressed my personal feelings that our local membership perhaps shows signs of two ways of emphasising the benefits of social nudity. The first way is that there be regular use made of one or two recognised beaches almost exclusively on every available occasion. This has been alluded to above, and I hasten to say that I understand this persuasion; but I have to say that a significant number of FBG folk both local and nationwide believe that to restrict ourselves to limited areas in one or two accepted nude localities is defeating the purpose of our FREE existence in contrast to the sun clubs' tradition of "four walls" and a "locked gate" syndrome. Therefore the second way of enjoying nudity in the W'gton district, as I see it, is to venture forth from time to time to other places, some "off the beaten track".

This letter is a Wellington District report, and as a Wellingtonian I acknowledge as an FBG 'Branch' we cannot boast of numerous free beaches in our lower North Island map; our typography doesn't lend itself to countless sandy beaches for FBG use. However, those of us claiming interests in tramping, camping, flora and fauna, photography, boating and fishing, and above all in getting away from it all - even our wardrobes! I feel the Wellington Provincial district offers much for expeditions far and wide for the active and adventurous amongst us, and we should not lose sight of our unique lower North Island character. Many remote coastlines and inland river valleys and hill country areas are available for clothes-optional abandonment.

In conclusion it should be reported that half a dozen of us Wellington District FBG members were happy to be amongst the many who again enjoyed the magic of Ngatuhoa Lodge this summer. And while the decision was made not to visit Papamoa Beach as scheduled for the 29 January on account of local Kaimai Range weather, three of us Wellington group members did in fact spend some three warm and sunny hours at Papamoa that day while enroute home to Wellington, and so did some fifty other nude folk not claiming membership of the Free Beach Group.

Chch News

THOUSANDS CHEERED while Hadlee made cricket history at Lancaster Park last Sunday. Thousands stayed indoors watching the box. A few individualists ran around naked at Woodend Beach, dunking themselves in the briny, evincing no apparent reaction from passing textiles. "Chacun à son goût." Freedom of choice, after all, is what we're promoting.

We are now well into the first summer season of our Christchurch FBG, and can begin to assess what we've learnt so far. We have to accept that things are very unpredictable. Being a member of FBG carries no obligations other than common sense and courtesy. As remarked by someone, "We have to take the rough with the smooth." The rough is when you travel long distances - by bike! - over hilly terrain and shingle roads, arriving at the beach to find you're the only one there. The smooth is when everything turns out perfect like the Waimakariri River trip on Feb. 3rd, voted by those present, "the best day we've had." Beautiful weather and scenery, warm rippling water, compatible people, no textiles and - praise be - a modicum of shade for mid-day siesta. A warm thank you to the Robertson family for a) arriving early and signposting the route to the chosen spot, b) sharing their two canoes, c) their smiling faces and hospitality. An evening barbecue at their home rounded off the day; and that's when we got together to concoct another FBG programme for the next two months - see below.

Much of what we are doing this year is reconnaissance. We are learning by experience, taking into account the time of year and type of venue: e.g. Woodend and Waikuku during high summer; too hot/windy on the open beach for a sandcastle competition! However, we had lovely picnics there with the children from 3.00-7.00p.m. On the other hand, especially in small coves such as Camp Bay, Tumbledown or Hobson's Bay (adjoining Taylor's Mistake), it pays to arrive early, say l0.00a.m., and set up a Fred Bear posi before the textiles arrive. These are lovely spots with rock pools and places for the children to explore, but DISCRETION is needed. It may be necessary to resort to wearing 'le minimum' at least part of the time, especially at Hobson's Bay when bach-owners are present.

It will be autumn by the time you receive this newsletter. The weather may be more settled and less intense, so our get-together times may co-incide around lunch time. Good news: Robyn has offered to act as co-ordinator for your queries or last-minute changes of plan, etc. PHONE 895-488.

'Newd Zealand' video
publicity boost for country

David Ball, a film maker who describes himself as the world's most public nudist, has just finished his latest work - Newd Zealand.

The appropriately named Englishman has spent the last five years flying around the world producing videos of nudmu in various countries, including the United States, the Netherlands and South Africa.

While the more conservative would describe his work as "soft porn tourist films" he believes New Zealand will benefit greatly from his latest effort.

"There is a very strong tourist emphasis.

"If we wanted to show naked bodies we could do it in the back yard.

"We have tried to capture the character and personality of this country," he said last week while visiting Christchurch.

The 44-year-old has been a dedicated naturist for 20 years since stumbling onto a nude beach on the Isle of Wight while on holiday.

He built up his own corporate production company but in 1984 the call of travel saw him install a manager and sink $90,000 into a feature film titled "Educating Julie".

Filmed in England, France and Florida it has become a "classic", according to Ball, who has been selling it by mail order since 1984.

He then went on to make films in the United States, the Netherlands (a one hour look at what Dutch narurists do in winter) and Africa, the ultimate nude adventure.

In that video he has nudists wandering naked around a 17,000 acre game park and coining face to face with lions, rhinos and crocodiles.

After releasing Newd Zealand in May he heads back to the United States and in September is scheduled to shoot in the West Indies.

He has been impressed with New Zealand sun clubs but believes they must market themselves better to survive.

"The good news here is that Kiwis are far more tolerant of nudists than most other countries.

"The bad news is that nudists don't seem to realise this and are not capitalising on it."

He said some nudists had to come out of the closet and lobby for their lifestyle.

"The time is right in New Zealand to press for totally nude beaches.

"At the moment there is separation on the beaches and that is like a form of nudist apartheid.

"You must fight for nudist equality.

"I think it is offensive to see an overweight woman trying to squeeze herself into a bathing costume that is three times too small."

He believes sun clubs must use beaches as a major new source of recruitment, offering top-class facilities to attract young people.

They should employ marketing people and managers or they will be in danger of becoming secret societies or geriatric retirement clubs.

Ball is a firm believer that nudism reduces stress and tension.

"I would like to see Thatcher and Gorbachev sitting totally nude around a table. That would soon strip away any cultural barriers."

Ball, who has appeared in many of his own films, has been invited by the Polish Nudist Federation to visit that country and film post glasnost nudism.

He is also keen to shoot in France, West Germany and possibly Russia.

When in Christchurch he filmed at the Canterbury Sun Club, Rolleston. It will feature in Newd Zealand which he believes will do much to promote tourism in this country.

NZ Herald, Wednesday, March 7, 1990 * SECTION 1

Nudity 'drawcard'

NZPA                                Hastings

Legal nudity at Ocean Beach, on the coast east of Hastings, would draw tourists from all over the world, members of the Hawkes Bay Sun club have told the Hastings District Council.

The club wants the council to change a by-law which forbids nudity in public places.

A club member, Edna Barnes, told the council community and recreation committee that Ocean Beach had been used for nude recreation for more than 20 years, at a site about 1km north of the surf lifesaving clubhouse.

During that time she had heard of only one complaint and that was made about a person who undressed in front of the surf club.

No one had ever complained about being offended by naked sun club members at a more remote part of the beach and there had never been any problems when the club held advertised open days at the beach, she said.

The reason for wanting nudity legalised at a designated area of Ocean Beach was to tidy the legal aspect.

A successful prosecution under present laws was unlikely because it would be hard to interpret the

words "properly and sufficiently clad," she said.

Nudist beaches and nature resorts were legally accepted throughout the rest of tire world. If Ocean Beach could be added to the list it would be publicised in official nudist magazines, resulting in more tourists visiting Hawkes Bay, Barnes said.

The committee chairman, Mr Colin Shanley and Mr David Pearse were the only opponents of the application.

The committee decided to discuss the matter at its next meeting.

Film will promote
New Zealand nudism

by Lisa Nicolson

"KIWI nudists unite!" says British film producer and fellow nudist Dave Ball.

"I think it's time for Kiwi nudists to integrate themselves with clothed society - to let them (clothed people) see for themselves that nudists aren't weirdos. We are just people who want to enjoy the sun."

Mr Ball is in New Zealand to make a film on the nudist scene for Heritage Productious. Yesterday, he visited the Palmerston North Sun Club.

He has devoted his creative talents to nudism since 1984, and has made several films including Educating Julie, his first, and Naked Africa.

"No one has made a film on nudist people here. The Commonwealth Games drew some attention to this country, so I capitalised on that while New Zealand was still fresh in people's minds."

Mr Ball says his film will attract not only a lot of attention to nudism, but will help generate tourist dollars for this country.

"Nudists are probably among the world's greatest travellers. I'm not sure why.

"Through the films, we are trying to break down this obscure fear that people have about their bodies.

"I sincerely believe that, when people learn to like themselves and accept themselves for what they are, the world will be a much better place."

Mr Ball has travelled almost the entire length of the North Island, filming at different sun clubs and nudist beaches.

"We really want to capture the character of New Zealand. Filming nude people is basically the same wherever you go, so we will be including a fair amount of tourist-type stuff in the movie."

During his time in this country. he has noticed a few differences between nudism here and overseas.

"I have certainly seen some interesting contrasts. In one sense, New Zealand is freer than most countries I have been to in terms of its attitude to nudity. The things they have shown on television here they would never dream of showing in America. In the item on us in the news, they had full frontals. But by contrast, the nudists themselves in New Zealand are perhaps a little slow to capitalise on what they have."

Mr Ball has another two weeks in New Zealand, which he will spend in the South Island. His film will be released worldwide in June.

The right to go nude is one of the basic human rights, according to visiting Englishman and avid nudist David Ball.

Mr Ball, a trained cameraman, has been visiting New Zealand with his Danish companion Lene Kjeldgaard to make what is New Zealand's first nudist documentary - Newd Zealand. The video would be distributed worldwide.

An independent film maker with an English company, Heritage Videos, Mr Ball has travelled the world making films about nudist activity.

He is in New Zealand for five weeks and while in the Capital he plans filming at the Wellington Sun Club at Te Marua.

Mr Ball has been looking at other clubs and beaches in the North Island, and will move on to the South Island for more filming.

Mr Ball has a direct philosophy for those wondering what nudism is all about.

'basic human right'

"It is all very respectable and that is what the video is about - respectable nudism. The vast majority of people are sensible, enough to handle the concept."

Mr Ball agrees the world is a long way from ideal attitudes to nudism but says there should be more freedom of choice.

"Nudity is no big deal - the act is natural and I don't like the idea of nudist apartheid," he said.

"Denmark has the perfect society for nudism and you are protected by law - the same laws apply to nudists as to people who wear clothes. They all have to behave themselves".

There are about 2000 members of the New Zealand Nudist Federation but that is a mere drop in the ocean compared with the 40 to 50 million people involved around the world.

"There is a whole city of nudists at Cap d'Agde, near Montpeilier in the South of France," Mr Ball says.

A nudist for 22 years and a film maker for 12 years, Mr Ball has made videos in Africa, Holland, America and France.

While here Mr Ball has been impressed by people's attitudes although he says New Zealand nudists tend to be a little shy.

"Nudists here and in other countries should start demanding their rights and stop apologising."
