November, 1980

Dear Members,

Summer Time started with Labour Weekend, and so did summertime. Auckland was just 12 minutes short of a record for total sunshine over three days, and from reports received the rest of the country similarly enjoyed what is to be hoped is the prelude to a better summer. The weather has certainly prompted a gratifying surge in letters requesting information on group activities and ideals.

Unfortunately the response has not been so positive from some of our existing members. It may well be that those who have not yet paid their subs feel that our cause is won and that there is no need to continue fighting. Lying naked on a sun-soaked beach it is very easy to believe this, but there is a catch. Gather any group of Free Beachers together and inevitably the subject of legal beaches arises. There is a fear, hopefully unfounded, that given a legal beach we may be herded on to it, with consequent loss of the many splendid beaches we have come to regard as "free".

This fear cannot be ignored; however the reverse is equally true. What right really, have we to regard any beach as "free"? Public acceptance and recognition are great — I wrote of this last time. Events throughout New Zealand history, however, show that when the crunch comes public opinion counts for nought. As things stand an "anti" movement could wipe us off beaches within months.

Fortunately it appears that nudity in itself has never been illegal. Conversely, nor has it ever been legal. It is to sort out this riddle that official beaches are required. The beaches in themselves may be only symbols; it is the principle behind them that is important - the RIGHT to go naked on public beaches.

It is this riddle that hampers all our approaches to Councils. Where a positive reaction meets our initial approaches (and this occurs is a gratifying number of cases) their support always founders on the question of legality. Our position is far from secure.

So by all means go on enjoying the sun, but please continue to support the Group in its efforts on behalf of "Free Beachers" in New Zealand.

Where were all those Aucklanders who were so eager for another Waiwera trip? It was cancelled at the last minute due to lack of support. There is a constant call for more social events but all too often a woeful lack of support. They require a lot of organisation and in this case a lot of quick footwork to cancel food, etc. The Committee has done this willingly in the past, but must understandably be a bit dubious in future. Last month I spoke of projected newsletters. This programme was drawn up in September, without close reference to calendar, or anticipation of problems that can delay. This newsletter is therefore the last for this year. Look for your next letter towards end of January. I trust this will not inconvenience Local Organisers who were working to earlier advised dates. If you do have something to say to your local areas, let us have it and we will ensure those directly concerned are advised.

An exciting new development on the scene has come from the proprietors of CRYSTAL SPRINGS PARK AND MOTOR INN of Matamata. Although a well-known and popular resort, an open area at the rear is now intended as a "clothing optional" section. This part is well screened and includes camping, barbecue, children's play area and its own fully concreted hot pool. Put on some clothes and go through the gate, and there are a host of other facilities. More details of this will be advised.

You will recall that you have been advised of two trips organised by Charles at Bay of Plenty - to Mayor Island and Ngatuhoa Lodge. A couple of errors have caused Charles untold distress and you are asked to note that the trip to Mayor Island on 24, 25, 26 January will, as previously, be by boat, not by bus (although that could be interesting!). The week-end at Ngatuhoa Lodge is at the week-end of Waitangi Day, 6, 7 and 8 February. For this abysmal misinformation the Secretary apologises, and pleads fatigue. Charles also advises the availability of a caravan plus power point facilities block, room for tents, opposite beautiful free beach towards Papamoa. For information concerning all these, contact Charles Saggers, ph. Tauranga 57-497.

From Jenny we have received a delightful account of the previous trip to Mayor Island, of which we can produce only a few highlights, namely - Confusion over boat, but very helpful local bod, then stowing all that gear; a late pick up of Peter and Pam who had been incorrectly advised the trip was cancelled. "Mayor Island is as God left it — not even a jetty", which makes for interesting unloading; a perfect afternoon in West Bay and much enthusiasm for a morning walk to crater lookout. Only three were game to make the early start i.e. without breakfast; Jenny, John and Gary. Latter two turned back at lookout while Jenny went on. Her advice about bush walking without clothes, food, water etc — DON'T. She went back again to the crater lookout next day, though. Perhaps the highest of the highlights:
A naked dip in the deep blue depths off the boat on Monday's return.

From WELLINGTON John Lowe advises they anticipate trips to Pekapeka - over the creek 400 metres north of the Sand Castle Motel. For the Pekapeka road, turn off State Highway 1 about 4 km north of Waikanae. For drive-on access to the beach, come from Te Horo and drive south along the beach for about 2 km. There is also to be a Sauna Evening on 28 November at Dave and Barbara's place: 2 Beach Street, Titahi Bay (BYO towel and $2 per head). 10 to 14 January it is hoped to take part in a canoe trip down Wanganui River. 2 options: (1) A Wanganui Club couple and friends with about four teenagers are canoeing the river down to Pipiriki from the next road access upstream, south of Taumarunui and the cost will be just the hire of the canoes (about $30) but everything else must be provided. Contact Ian Johnstone, 89 Mt View Road. (2) The River and Lake Canoeing Co. (a couple from Palmerston N) will run a parallel trip around the same time and over the same stretch as option 1, but with everything including transport laid on for $125 for 10 people. They can also manage a couple of kids. The canoes in this case will be the open 2-man Canadian type. On the week-end 6 - 8 February there is to be a week-end at Mapua Leisure Park. 3 nights accom. $13 approx for motel units (12 persons) or $8 approx for caravans (24 persons). This is a bit sketchy, but if it appeals, contact John immediately at 6 Amos Way, Kingston, Wellington or phone 899-871.

Things are under way in HAWKES BAY and they have an outing planned for l4 December. If you are in the district over the holidays contact Tom Wheeler phone 89-474. Hastings (discreetly) or Tony Briggs 69-808 Hastings.

A member from HAMILTON has indicated that he is willing to act as a "contact" If you would like to arrange something, or want some information, why not phone Jack D at K-Market, Ph 73-360 Hamilton.

In NELSON Kay and Marcia Heslop have a farm at Rototai Road, Takaka, with about half a mile of beach, and Kay is making a camping place. They would love to have some visitors so why not drop them a line and include that in your South Island caravan holiday? Incidentally, we have quite a lot of members in Nelson - isn't there anyone among you who would act as Local Organiser to bring all those beautiful people together occasionally?

If you are going to NORTHLAND over the holidays don't forget to contact Bill Main 875 Whangaruru or Craig Buckley 71-373 Whangarei and share the Northland sun with some new friends.

The annual CHRISTMAS SOCIAL will be held on 6 December, commencing at 8.00 p m, at - St Barnabas' Scout Hall

Clive Road, Mt Eden - Epsom

(Runs between Mountain Road and Mt Eden Road)

Admission will be $1.00, well-behaved children free, others not welcome. Soft shoes, please, kids. Ladies a plate, please, and gentlemen BYO. There will be games, competitions and dancing. Make a most outrageous hat and wear it - you could win a prize (we promise it will not be a trip to Hong Kong). Do come along and let's have a happy evening together. As always, friends are welcome - and DON'T FORGET THE DATE!

Ray and Marion Woolhouse have moved from Manurewa, and those wishing to contact them should now phone 547-211.

A request from a member:

Ladies, I'm 5'6", trim build, 9 st 10 lbs, and a non—smoker. I would like to meet a slim lady to mid—forties for Free Beach trips and other activities of mutual interest. Phone 655-031 and ask for Francis.

Towels and T-shirts have been posted out; if you wish more than one of these items would you please add at least 50c for postage. 2 towels and 2 shirts just cost us $1.40 in postage. I really think the Post Office should hand out a free aspirin with that kind of information!

We regret this will be the last newsletter for those members who are still unfinancial by the time the next one goes out. Do try to remember to renew your sub, as it does make a lot of work bringing you up to date later in the year.

CLIVE GREEN sauna evenings will end for this year on 21 December. Tea and coffee, wine and biscuits will be free, and if anyone feels like bringing a plate that would be nice. Admission $3.00, children free. 5-11 p.m. Stan extends his best wishes and advises careful sunning.
Your editor and committee would also like to wish you all sun and fun over the holiday period.
