10 April 1980

Dear Friends,

It seems a while since the last newsletter, doesn't it - time to grow some lovely tans! Actually that is not as facetious as it sounds at first, because despite the awful elements, there have been some quite successful outings enjoyed by our members. Perhaps the luckiest was the barbecue at Cheltenham Beach on 1 March, with rain before and rain after, but none during. Our thanks to Stuart McFarlane for making the function the delicious success that it was.

Bay of Plenty have been fortunate in having Sarndra Elliott working hard for them, and the two fishing trips were, by all accounts, tremendously enjoyed. To date I have not heard about the Easter week-end at Ngatahoa Lodge, but with the welcome let-up in the weather how could it be anything but spot-on! We'd still like to hear, though.

Anthony Danson and his wife, Kaye, in Mangawhai would like members to know that they would welcome visitors when you are in their vicinity. Their property is suitable for camping, and close to the beach (sunny Northland, remember). It would be as well to drop them a line first, to P.O. Box 34 Mangawhai. Thank you Anthony and Kaye.

Many of you will remember Kevin Daniels, our own personal lifesaver. He has gone to Australia, but has left for our use a neoprene Rescue Tube - I hope we'll never need it, but you never know on those wild West coast beaches.

We have been informed that your "Naturist" is going to cost you more (so what else is news)! From the March issue No. 94, the price will be $5.20 for 4 issues, post free. I hope we are going to see some of those pictures you photo buffs have been submitting.

Have you noticed a couple of quite encouraging noises in the newspapers regarding our requests to Councils for Swimwear Optional beaches? Even the Councils who turned us down are now officially aware of our existence, and the Committee feels there is room for hope. What is happening in the rest of New Zealand? Among our cosmopolitan and talented membership there must be some who could write a letter to their local Councils. Keep up the good work, Wellington.

I hope many of you will use your Directory to DIAL-A-FRIEND and get small groups together to enjoy an outing together. I know that a number of people are able to go out during the week and would be glad of company, and your Directory can be a big help.

There will not be a Diary published with this Newsletter. By now you are probably all aware of the regular Sunday night Sauna at the Clive Green Health Centre in Federal Street, City, from 5 till 9 p.m. Have you tried the one at St Lukes Sauna and Squash Centre in St Lukes Road right opposite the shopping centre? Showers, sauna, plunge pool, coffee and T.V. are available from 5 to 9.30 p.m. on Sunday evenings.

The popular Swimerama evenings will commence shortly, but we have as yet no firm date.

We have received the following notification from the North Shore Nudist Club:

"Could you please make a note that there is to be  no clothing whatsoever worn in the pools".

** As the last Friday of April is Anzac Day, a public holiday, the date for this month has had to be amended to the 18th.

** Don't forget there is one more outing planned - Motiuhe on 27th April. High tide is at 6.05 p.m. The North Shore Ferries and Blue Boats both run a service to the island, leaving at about 9 a.m. and 9.30 a.m. Return 4 p.m. Do try and make it.

In July there will be a film and slide evening, so start now to get your exhibits ready. Perhaps some of the people from outside Auckland could plan to attend, or what about running one in your own district? More about this in the next letter.

AND NOW --- the event you have all been waiting for!
Another social evening at Waiwera Hot Pools, with barbecue meal. Bring whatever you want to drink, but no glasses are allowed - plastic drinking vessels will be supplied (no - not yard glasses). The price - a never-to-be repeated $8.5O per head. We regret no refunds, so if you have to cancel you must dispose of your ticket yourself. Please fill in the coupon below and return it A.S.A.P. to the Secretary. Mark your envelope "Waiwera Trip", and don't forget to put the money in!

The bus departure times are as previously:

Hunter's Corner 4.30 pm, Greenlane/Gt Sth Road 4.45 pm,

  Some thoughts from Robin --

WHAT A NERVE

thought your Chairman a few months ago, looking in the mirror, to inflict a fat tummy (the sight of it, that is) on other beach users. And so to jog, and eventually to come in 29,567th. or thereabouts in Round the Bays. Five kilograms later (with a few more to go) he deludes himself that he looks better, and certainly feels better, without really dieting! Now nudism really began as a health fad, and exercise was (and is) all the rage in the Continent. Have we gone too far the other way? A shame that we could not enter our own Fred Bear Team in RTB: perhaps we will next year. Not in uniform, though, I suspect. (Pity: the Greeks found it ideal!) N O W it would be nice if some of us could jog together in evenings and weekends, wouldn't it? Not every district has ideal courses, but by sharing petrol foursomes, say, could go to Cornwall Park, the Domain, Tamaki Drive* (Robin's favourite) or other places not too far away. Give Robin a ring (5343318) or drop a line to P0 Box 38316 Howick saying if you are expert/middling/novice, what area you prefer, what times, etc. *Tamaki Drive is well lit at night.

HOWICK SAUNA AND SWIMMING

Last Spring we mentioned that we hoped to start some swim nights/sauna evenings in Howick, and had a good response. Unfortunately Summer (???) came along and we decided not to start with only a few weeks to go. We hope to begin soon, though, and will let you know.

THAT NUDE STUDY

Did you guess? The artist of the sketch in the last newsletter was QUEEN VICTORIA! She and Prince Albert used to exchange pictures of this sort. Not drawn from life, probably. So "Victorian attitudes" aren't necessarily those of the good Queen.

Does anyone know a Free Beach (between East Coast and Cape Reinga) where we can park our Caravan over the Christmas Holidays. All care taken.
