Recently, Pineglades Naturist Club celebrated fifty years of naturism at its grounds in Rolleston, near Christchurch. At the Jubilee, many old photos and recollections from the early days were put on display. Amongst the memorabilia were two write-ups about the early years at Pineglades, which are summarised here. I thank Bill and Ken for writing down their memories so we can all remember what a mammoth task the early pioneers undertook, resulting in the fantastic facilities we all now enjoy at Pineglades. This is a brief history of the early days of the club, based on their writings. Pineglades Naturist Club started as the Canterbury Sun and Health Club in 1951, when Percy Cousins, Liaison Officer for naturism in New Zealand, brought three naturist couples together. With no grounds available, they visited secluded beaches for afternoons in the sand hills, always scared of being discovered by members of the public. They soon realised that this furtive existence was far from the relaxed lifestyle they were seeking, so when their membership reached 16, they started looking for and found the present grounds in Rolleston.
