Accounts

The Income & Expenditure Statement for the Year ending 31 July, 1993 is presented on this page, and shows an operating deficit of $1,033.85.

This year's expenditures appear to be very similar to last year, and will be presented at the AGM. It is anticipated that the deficit this year will be approximately $850. An additional drain on our reserves is the cost of our NSCC By-law challenge, some of which will be offset by donations.

An analysis of the Accounts will show that the newsletter represents about 75% of our expenditure at about $3600 per year to print and mail. Subscriptions, which are our main source of income, were only $2600. This year income from subscriptions was $3165, which is still not enough to cover the cost of the newsletter.

Administration costs about $535 per year, which is about 12% of our expenses.

The next major cost is the NZNF Levy which we pay to be an Affiliate of the NZ Nudist Federation Inc. Whereas our subscriptions are based on membership units (single, couple, or family), the levies are calculated on individual members. Half of our membership units are counted as two for the purpose of determining the levy due.

The $200 prize money shown will not continue, for obvious reasons.

This alarming state of affairs has only now become evident on completion of the Accounts from data received at Easter.

It has only been because of past "profits" that reserves had been built up and deposited in Term Deposits. Up until the end of last year, these amounted to $3500, but a $1500 Term Deposit was cashed in between the aborted 1993 AGM and the Special General Meeting that followed.

Now is not the time for recriminations. Now is the time to decide how to meet the costs of operating the Group in the future.

To raise the subscriptions to $20 per membership unit would not be enough unless our membership was increased significantly.

This cannot be guaranteed, and is a minimal choice. $25 would therefore be the appropriate subscription to ensure that we continue to maintain our standards, and survive to protect our rights to legitimate clothes free recreation.

President's Report

This has been a year of change, rethinking and moving forward.

When I sat down to consider the effort put forward this year I was overwhelmed. To put it all together would consume many pages and while it would make good reading, it would have to come out in book form. Therefore I have decided to highlight some of the areas and to present my report in a readable format.

A lot of what happened this year is the input and effort of a group of dedicated colleagues, who spent considerable numbers of hours meeting, discussing, travelling and putting things together. Your committee deserves the praise, they worked hard.

Of prime importance is the non-prosecution of one of our members for being nude on an Auckland beach. This resulted in the confirmation of the legal status of nudity within New Zealand. To follow this up, we have commissioned a Barrister to develop a legal opinion on the NSCC By-law. When completed, it is intended to use the opinion to revoke the by-law, and if necessary, to apply it against any other authority trying to outlaw nudity.

When the current committee was elected, it was decided that the organisation needed to be structured to represent all areas of New Zealand.

To achieve this, we:

  • established a National Committee

  • established four Regional Committees, Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Wellington, and Christchurch;

  • recreated the position of Vice President, and increased the number to two so that there would be a separate Vice President for the North and South Islands

  • reviewed the current set of "Rules", made some adjustments and renamed it the "Free Beach Group Inc. Constitution" (copy included with this newsletter).

There was some immediate concern placed upon the Committee by a Motion at the NZNF AGM seeking clarification of FBG objectives and direction. As a result, many hours have been spent looking at our Mission, reviewing our discipline procedures, and streamlining our Rules. The result is the creation of a Mission supported by workable strategies.

We need to extend the concept of nudity into all appropriate areas of recreation, and to fly our flag as a sign of presence and safety to all nudists and other beach users. This year we have had discussions with the police, and have agreed to co-operate with them to rid the beaches and surrounds of the "undesirable element". Our flag will act as a focal point and if necessary we will file complaints against those who cause offence. We have created brochures which will be passed to potential members or to people who may wish to know more about the Group. These brochures contain general information, the Group's Mission Statement and beach Etiquette. Further ideas are being developed at the Regional level.

We aim to present to the public an organisation which is not only in tune with nature, but provides a safe place to be on the beach, nude or clothed.

We intend to extent and re-scope our most popular non-beach event, Ngatuhoa. While the attendance was down slightly this year, it was an unqualified success, and the Forum proved to be very popular. Nobody could ask for better weather. There is no description which can adequately describe Ngatuhoa. As a result, the period for our presence next year has been extended. Everyone involved has my thanks (Adele, Glenda and Ted).

As has been reported in previous newsletters, we have had considerable difficulty obtaining the Group's accounts for the last financial year. We finally received the data in April, several invoices/receipts are missing, but we have carried out the necessary reconciliation, and prepared a set of Annual Accounts; they have yet to be audited. The tentative Income & Expenditure Statement is included with this newsletter. You will see that we had an excess expenditure (loss) of $1033. The year before had a profit of $97, and the year before that a loss of $663. This year, we anticipate another operating loss of $850, bringing the accumulated losses to $2546. The surrender of a Term Deposit of $1500 by the retiring Committee was a clue to our troubles. In addition, we have remitted $1240 to the NSCC By-law challenge (as approved by the 1993 AGM).

These losses were inherited by the current Committee. It the Accounts had been presented to the 1993 AGM, appropriate action could have been instituted. The arbitrary subscription increase to $15 at the last AGM was too late and too little to cover costs.

This year's expenses are comparable to last year. Some may protest that we are not a profit organisation. This is true, but if it had not been for our reserves (past "profits"), we would not have made it through the last two years. It is irresponsible for us to have waisted the reserves built up by the efforts of previous competent committees.

We cannot continue to operate under these conditions, we need to take immediate action.

If we increase our subscriptions to $20, and add another 50 members, we will increase our income by $1500 per year. This is a minimum improvement we can contemplate if we are to fulfil our mission and maintain present standards.

This has been a busy year, ft has been a year of consolidation and re-alignment. The start of the year was a bit shaky, but we soon stabilised and the effort has been very productive.

Thank you for your tolerance. Thank you for your input and your suggestions. We need your help, on the beaches, in the Regions and on the committees. Get involved, and help us to make our 21st year a great year.

Notice of motions

It is Proposed:

1:   That the amended an revised Constitution of the FREE BEACH GROUP Inc be adopted.

Explanation

In order to ensure that The Group was in line with it's thinking and direction during the 90's, the Committee undertook to review the current Rules. This was spurred on by a motion at the NZNF 1993/94 Conference, and the request by the Incorporated Societies office to have organisations review the Constitutions. A copy of the proposed Constitution has been circulated to all members via the July-August newsletter.

2:  That postal voting be introduced for the election of officers of the National Committee for the 1995/96 year; and that this be extend to following years when proven successful.

Explanation

Because of the dispersed nature of the Group's membership, it has been difficult to get quorums at recent AGMs. The cost to travel long distances discourages many members from attending. The 1993 AGM at Auckland had to be abandoned due to the need of only two more members. It is unfair and undemocratic to deny members the right to vote because of distance and cost of travel. The multi venue AGM is an experiment which is not intended to be repeated. Postal voting would provide the opportunity to consider other options for AGMs.

3:   That subscriptions for the 1994/95 year be increased to $25 per membership unit ($25 Aust for Australian members, and $25US for all other overseas members to cover additional postage).

Explanation

Continuing tosses by the Group since 1991 cannot be sustained. Further explanations of our financial status are detailed on page 2.

Palm Springs Hot Pools

FBG members are welcome to attend the Hibiscus Coast Hot Pool Night held at 'PALM SPRINGS', Parakai, near Helensville. Bring your FBG membership card with you as the nights are organised by the Hibiscus Coast Sun Club. Times are 6pm to midnight on the last Saturday of the month, Adults $8.00, Children $2.00. The complex has three pools, three spa-pools with takeaways available on site. For those of you who enjoy caravanning there is a good camp ground virtually opposite the pool complex - a number of FBG members regularly stay overnight. Dates: July 20, August 27

Bob Williamson

Ngatuhoa 1995

Advanced notice is that Ngatuhoa 1995 has been organised for a longer period, and will be for 10 days (9 nights) from 21 January to 30 January, This covers the Wellington and Auckland Anniversary weekends.

Full details will be given in future newsletters, but at least you can plan your Summer vacation around these dates.

Mardi Gras Rally 1995

The 43rd National NZNF Rally will take place on the grounds of the Canterbury Sun Club at "Pineglades" from Wednesday 28 December 1994 to Tuesday 3 January 1995 inclusive. "Pineglades" is situated at Rolleston, Approximately 20km south of Christchurch. An innovation of the "Carnival of Social Nudity" will be The Bourbon Street Cafe and Garden Bar; the alfresco restaurant has an extensive lunch-time and dinner menu at very reasonable prices.

Registration fee of $85 per adult for the whole Rally includes all rally costs, entertainment, New Years Eve supper, three course meal during the Theatre Restaurant evening and all camping fees from 28 December to 3 January.

For Registration form and full details, write to the FBG Secretary, PO Box 41-171, St Lukes, Auckland.

Nominations for National Committee

Nominations for the National Committee are required for the following positions: President, Vice President (2), Secretary, Treasurer, and Committee members.

Verbal nominations will be received by the Chair at the AGM.

Written nominations must be received by the Secretary before 5 August, 1994, these must state the name of the person nominated, the position, the name of the nominator and seconder, together with the signatures of all three persons.

End of an Era

To be or not to be is not the question, or the answer really! The question is when.

We had heard that the Atlantis Sauna, Karori was closing and on Friday night, 27 May our fears were confirmed. Seven FBG members were present that night, but on most other occasions we packed out the place affectionately we called Wally's.

Wally told us he looked forward to our sauna nights, and so did we. So after 16 years the Atlantis Sauna has closed. We have been told that it will reopen after refurbishment, but it won't be the same.

Ask not ...

I have been an active member of naturist clubs for 35 years, and have supported the Free Beach Group since its inception, because I see all naturist organisations as part of a world-wide network of like-minded people, believing, as the NZ Dictionary says, that "going without clothes is healthy and enjoyable".

I am now in the "retired" age group and can report that I have gained incalculable benefits from a lifelong naturist (ie clothes-optional) lifestyle. Nor have I noticed, socially or in my professional career, any adverse effects resulting from my openness and matter-of-factness on the topic.

Our newsletter is being used as a sounding-board for various points of view. That's OK. Something good and constructive will emerge. I am joining in.

To any FBG members who are complaining that they are not getting their money's worth for the $15 annual subscription they pay, or, specifically, that there is nothing happening locally, or that they are not represented on the National Committee: I have learned from experience that before complaining one must ask oneself - AM I willing to do the job?

In a group such as ours, everything is voluntary and we must heartily thank those who are keen enough to take it on. If nothing is happening, we have only ourselves to blame. Oh! Sorry - I'll modify that, we can blame the weather. Seriously though, the FBG is a DIY group, so it's up to you.

Five years ago, I was persuaded to co-ordinate a group in Christchurch. We had good weather that year (1989-90) and in one season gained 34 members locally (men, women, and children).

Here's how we went about it:

  • the National Secretary sent me a list of local members; and passed on local enquiries which subsequently came to hand;

  • when enquiries came to hand, I phoned them right away to invite them to attend our next beach day, and also sent them an application form;

  • organised local meetings, pooled suggestions, decided on a programme of a different location for every Saturday during the season (Sunday if necessary due to the weather);

  • did reconnaissance of local beaches and rivers;

  • made posters and put them up in appropriate places around the city and at Mapua Leisure Park;

  • added a Christchurch PO Box number;

  • when at beaches, etc, used the yellow Fred Bear flag a lot, and had a supply on hand for members to buy;

  • encouraged offers of hospitality/social outings, etc;

  • liaised with local Sun Clubs and joined in each other's activities as much as possible. Challenge local Sun Clubs to beach games, such as volleyball, rounders, sand castle competitions, etc.

(Joyce Fleming)

Here and there

We seem to be very fortunate in New Plymouth, with our beautiful Tapuae Beach, just a few minutes drive south, becoming even more popular, new couples and families have been coming along this year. Other people (but not many) use the beach for fishing, picnics and horse riding, and seem quite unconcerned. Sometimes hang-gliders and parachutists use the cliffs, and we find this rather amusing. Access is through a private farm, and is now by permission only, phone 751 1137.

While on a holiday to Russell last summer, Shirley and I stopped at Lang's Beach, south of Whangarei for a spot of sunbathing; it was lovely, but I don't think it is listed in the Beach Guide.

We found the Free Beach Guide to be very useful on our holidays.

We had a wonderful time at Blue Lake, Rotorua, where we spent four days in early March. It has been one of my favourite holiday spots for many years, although I've not been there for a few years. At that time, there was topless bathing In front of the camp. A beautiful camp and accommodation.

There are little beaches all around the lake, but the best one's for sunbathing are across on the opposite side, access is by a beautiful bush walk. So each afternoon we would stretch out, or splash about. Occasionally, people walked by, most said "Hello"; but one or two stared straight ahead, which we didn't think that was very flattering! Sometimes, a water-skier would fall off, but I don't think we were responsible for that.

There are bush walks all around the lake, and you can wander off into the bush meeting no one. There is also a network of tracks behind the camp, which seem to be unused (there's no chance of getting lost). Simply walk straight up through the camp and into the bush. It's an incredibly beautiful and peaceful spot.

Obituary

Michael Joseph Lakomy 1961 - 1994

It is with deep sadness and a great sense of loss that we record the sudden death of Michael on 11 June, 1994.

Michael was a member of the FBG since 1989 and before joining the Group, belonged to the NZNF Supporters Group. He participated in many of the activities organised by the Wellington Region FBG. He enjoyed nudism to the fullest and although not a swimmer, he rarely missed a "Beach Day" at Peka Peka, swim nights at Cannons Creek, or an Atlantis sauna night, as well as other events both social and recreational. He also spent several happy vacations at Rotota and Ngatuhoa where he will be remembered for his imaginative "costumes" at the fancy undress balls.

Michael was known for his quiet, gentle and pleasant personality. He was unfailingly polite and courteous, kind and considerate to all with whom he came into contact. His uninhibited, relaxed approach to nudism was a healthy example to many.

In his unassuming way, Michael made his own contribution to the activities of the FBG. Some of his drawings which he entered in the AGM competition were used in the Beach Guide. More recently he was responsible for the Wellington Events Calendar.

The fourteen members present at Michael's funeral each carried a small spray of yellow daisies with a black ribbon, which were cast on the coffin at the grave side.

A fitting epitaph was composed by Michael's brother Chris:

You would have painted the trees
In the trees you were found
A leaf in the wind
At peace on the bough.

Those who knew Michael will miss him keenly.

Geoff Horn

The reverse side of the Wellington News carries one of Michael's early drawings.

Right to Privacy

There is an established protocol within the nudist movement of which newcomers may not be aware.

It is not appropriate to tell others that someone else is a nudist or a member of the Group (or a Sun Club); this is not only impolite, it is an invasion of that person's privacy, and could cause personal embarrassment or unforeseen repercussions.

For many, this may not constitute a problem, but circumstances differ and are subject to change. No-one should presume to know whether another member is free or willing to have his/her activities discussed with others. After all, surely they are entitled to tell there own story.

Everyone has the right to privacy.

Just a little note to say those of us that went along enjoyed ourselves. We are able to be there on the calendared Saturdays from 3pm - 9pm. Children are catered for with pens and paper if they don't want a sauna etc. Our children seemed to enjoy talking to the staff when they weren't busy.

Wally's is closed until further notice so I hope everyone enjoys Mensana Sauna as we all did.

In July you will note the previously advertised night at Wally's has been replaced by an additional evening at Mensana. In August you can Join us after the AGM at Mensana so you have plenty of opportunity to try the Sauna and Health Centre. Trev.

Regional AGM

You will note from the calendar that our local AGM is set down for September so you will have plenty of time to think about your nominations etc. as there will be vacancies. A strong local committee is essential for dealing with issues such as development at Peka Peka and Breaker Bay. We are also needed for the co-ordination of local events. Basically if it happens in Wellington it should be a local committee issue and they need the members support and input. Think about it! Where do you want the local committee to head and are you willing to get involved?
