North Shore City by-law

There was not a lot of feedback from members. Some concern was expressed about men making a nuisance of themselves around single and small groups of women. Sexual attraction of course happens everywhere and is one of the forces keeping the human race on this planet but, since the recent court case however there has been an increase in undesirable activity such as openly masturbating in front of other people and women especially are having difficulty getting these people to leave them alone; treating it as a joke is not enough to stop it. Nudists do not accept this kind of behaviour, The police are sympathetic but cannot be everywhere at once and their advice is to discuss the problem with the local police. They suggest using cellphones or photographing the offenders. The particular complaint was at St Leonards beach and if we want to keep the beach I think that when we are down there ourselves we should make it quite clear that people making an undesirable nuisance of themselves are spoiling it for everyone.

By the time you read this we will have made submissions to North Shore City. The outcome will require discussion at the A.G.M.

J Riggir.

THANKS TO MEMBERS

From time to time the club receives donations of stationery items from members. Last year it was 4 reams of paper. Recently it was some envelopes and new ribbon cartridge and correction tape for the Secretary’s typewriter. We are most grateful to the members concerned for their generosity and although we have been asked to mention no names. it does seam appropriate to thank them through the newsletter.

WELLINGTON SWIM NIGHT

On May 10th our President and Secretary attended a swim night at the Porirua East Aquatic Swimming Centre with the Wellington members of the FBG. It was a cold night but was well attended with about 30 adults and at least 20 children making the effort to attend,The main pool was lukewarm so most of us stayed in the "wimps" pool which was hotter. Many members took advantage of the barbecues provided and enjoyed a good meal with friends, It was a pleasure to see so many younger people attending a club gathering. It was a very enjoyable evening with old acquaintances and new.

FERNLANDS 23rd MAY

This was enjoyed by nearly one hundred people from sun clubs all over the upper half of the North island. This included a number of our own people from Auckland. It was nice to meet a number of old friends again. This highly recommended event is held once a year. It is tremendous to sit in warm pools surrounded by fernery. Many thanks to our hosts - the Rotota Sun Club and a special thanks to Graeme Mcgregor.

THAMES COROMANDEL NEWS

Opoutere Weekend. 29th February

A great weekend was had by all (24 including 4 children). All credit and thanks must go to Brian and Wendy for inviting us and organising this excellent weekend at their 10 acres of paradise right on the beach. The wind on the beach was a little cool but there were plenty of sheltered areas on the property for sun bathing. Brian proved his skill as a fisherman by providing us with fish from his net which we smoked and barbecued for one of the communal meals which we all contributed to and enjoyed.

Rotota (Easter Weekend)

For those of us who were able to make it we had a restful and relaxing time among friends. Four glorious days of fun and relaxation both in and out of the water. Each of the mornings started out foggy which gave some of us the excuse to stay in bed till it cleared at about 9.30 when clear blue skies and windless days were enjoyed. We soaked in the coolish creek and hot tub, explored the grounds and surrounding areas, won the odd quick fire raffle and one of the South Auckland lot even beat their darts champ. A big thank you to Rotata for their hospitality and for welcoming us to their grounds and we hope we can return again next year.

Has anyone any ideas for something to do over the coming winter months, if so let us know and we will help you organise it. Frank and Carol can be reached at Ngatea. Phone (0843)77413.

CHRISTCHURCH NEWSLETTER

In April, 28 of our members enjoyed another swim in the Jellipark Aqualand heated swimming pool. The numbers mixed well and enjoyed the ball game, whilst the majority preferred to laze and talk about general matters. During the winter months of this year we are trying the sauna and spa because of the cold nights and the declining numbers attending the swims.

The 3rd May saw another enjoyable evening with a trip into the Sunrise Lounge for a spa and sauna evening. The evening allowed for the members to sit and engage in discussions in the pool, or to sit in the lounge by the open fire. Colour telly was on for those not wanting to be involved in conversation. The 20 members that attended this function were well satisfied they got their money's worth from it. Good work folk, hope these attendances can be maintained or bettered.

The lounge supplied towels, orange cordial and glasses arid the zip was boiling for the duration of our stay for those who liked to talk over a cup of tea or coffee. The $10 entry fee into the evening was a very moderate price for the satisfaction got back from it. The Sunrise Lounge opens especially for our group on Sundays during the winter months as these are their maintenance months.

Our next evening at the Sunrise is booked for the 14th June. hopefully it will be a monthly event until the weather starts to warm up again.

STOP PRESS

The North Shore City Council proposes to introduce a by-law to ban nudity on beaches under the control of the Council.

The proposed by-law reads as follows:

No person over the age of 12 years shall be on or remain upon any part of any beach or beach reserve while their pubic areas are exposed to the view of other persons.

The ramifications of the proposed by-law, and it's influence on other authorities could be horrendous.

Members are invited to write a submission opposing the Council's intention to introduce the by-law.

Written submissions should be addressed to:

NORTH SHORE CITY COUNCIL

The Strand,

Private Bag 93-500,

Takapuna,

NORTH SHORE CITY               Attention: Ms Marion White

Submissions close 4pm, 30 June, 1992.    Try and submit one week before deadline.

Points to consider:

Parliament and the Courts do not deem nudity to be illegal.

The proposal is against the traditional usage of the beaches which have a history of nude bathing for more than 100 years

The objectionable behaviour which has evoked the proposed by-law is unacceptable to the nudists who use the beaches.

Is a by-law necessary to deal with the offending behaviour on the beaches?

If nudity is not an offence under Section 4 Summary Offences Act 1981 (Police v Ceramalus), can a public body outlaw nudity by means of a by-law?

Is the proposed by-law contrary to the Bill of Rights?

Does the proposed by-law conflict with Criminal Statute?

Will the by-law be applicable to the Queen's Chain?

If the by-law is introduced, will it solve the problem7

If you would like to make an oral submission, or require more information, contact Fran or John Riggir (phone 09-576-5219).

Wellington members should phone Frank Peek (phone 04-389-3860).

Send a copy of your submission to the Secretary, Free Beach Group (Inc), Box 41-171, St Lukes, AUCKLAND 3

WELLINGTON NEWS

July - August, 1992

A number of active Wellington members gathered together on 16 May for an informal review of recent events, and a discussion of future activities. A wide range of subjects were covered.

It was generally agreed that we should maintain our present structure unless someone did not wish to continue. Marilyn took the opportunity to withdraw as our public relations spokesperson, and Frank has accepted this position. Bill agreed to continue as our local members contact, and Peter agreed to continue as our Editor.

Peter proposed that we form a committee to supervise all the activities associated with anything the Wellington group prints or distributes on behalf of the Free Beach Group. The task of the committee will be to ensure that the democratic character of the group is maintained, and that all decisions will be the responsibility of the committee. This means that people will continue to do the same tasks that they have been doing, in the same way, but will be accountable to the committee. Members of the present committee include Peter, Bill, Odette, John, and Clark. We will be happy to continue to print/collate the Group Newsletter for another year.

RANGI WOODS Camp: We reviewed the weekend camp at Rangi Woods, and unanimously agreed that it was a great place, well worth developing as an annual event. It was disappointing that more Wellington members were not there, however several came from far away. We discussed the timing of future camps. Some thought that the three day Wellington Anniversary weekend would be a good time, followed by two nights at Rotota, on the way to the Ngatuhoa Camp. Others preferred some other weekend after Ngatuhoa, that would not interfere with their plans to spend four or five days at Rotota on their way to Ngatuhoa. Grant was asked to check with the YMCA on available dates for next year. A committee will be formed to co-ordinate the planning of the next camp.

AUCKLAND BEACHES: Some time was spent discussing the North Shore City Council's decision to pass a by-law to ban nudity on beaches under it's control, and the implications this could have on other Local Authorities. Reference was made to the pro-active action being taken by Sydney nudists to combat a similar problem. Grant referred to his talks with the local police about nudism at Breaker Bay, and their lack of concern. It was felt that we should maintain this dialogue, so that we have open channels if we needed to communicate in the future. Most of us believe that we should follow the pro-active approach outlined in Frank's article in the last Wellington News. Bill expressed his reservations, and favoured the adoption of a low profile until the problem went away, so that we did not give the authorities cause to take action against nudism. Peter reminded us that the problem that the North Shore City Council had, was NOT nudism, but behaviour which is already illegal. Grant agreed to maintain contact with the local police, and if appropriate, local authorities. Frank has offered to assist Grant.

Neil and Ross felt the need for a pamphlet to hand to potential new members on the beach, describing our objectives and activities, and how to join the Group. Neil will develop this idea for the committee to consider.

A short discussion followed on the Wellington events calendar. John asked if we could include more information on the calendar, rather than cram adverts in the text of the Newsletter. Bill responded that he was not prepared to compromise his design, but later said that he would see if it was possible to make some arrangements to add more details. Some said they found Bill's calendar very useful, but others found it confusing.

We also discussed the Group Directory of members, which was aborted this year. We formulated some ideas which we asked Bill to discuss with the Auckland Committee, and offer to prepare the next Directory if requested. Geoff and Bill will represent us at the AGM in Auckland, with help from any other members able to be present.

RECENT EVENTS

The pot luck meal and party at Meryl and Rick's on 2 May was enjoyed by all, and we are grateful to Meryl for a successful evening.

Grant presented a well prepared speech to the Lower Hutt Toast Masters recently. The object was to persuade a controversial audience on the rights of a minority interest. Grant's topical choice was to take the Free Beach Group case versus the North Shore City Council. Some of the responses were very amusing. One took the part of a bikie (complete with appropriate jargon) who wanted to know if the Council made a particular beach available for nude bathing, how would they (the bikers) get their bikes down the steep path so that they could ride around in the nude!

COMING EVENTS

Remember to phone Bill (04-562-8514) about the mid Winter Party, Saturday 20-June, (re food to bring, etc); preceded by a dip in Wellington Harbour for those who have no respect for very cold water.

Meryl has invited us to another pot-luck meal and party, Saturday 18 July; phone Meryl on 04-528-7010 for more details.

Trevor is arranging a social event for Saturday, 15 August, details yet to be firmed up. Phone Trevor on 04-233-9248 to find out what he organised.

It has been proposed that we have meeting on or about 5 September, to discuss the Auckland AGM and to plan our Summer calendar. It you have any good ideas for this Summer, have them ready.

REGULAR EVENTS

SWIM NIGHTS are proving a very popular evening every second Sunday each month at Cannons Creek Aquatic Centre, Porirua, at 6pm., Adults $3, children $1, or families $7.

HOT SAUNA every fourth Friday each month is another popular event at Atlantis Sauna, 157 Karori Road, Karori, from 5-30pm. Adults $6-50 and children free.
