NGATUHOA

A great time was had by all. 74 members & friends enjoyed themselves sunbathing, partying and body painting. Bill and Fern McKenzie supplied a lamb and cooked it on a spit. This was well received by everyone. Thank you Bill and Fern. A number of children were present and we would like to thank the parents for the control they exercised over them, however there were isolated instances of lack of supervision. The children did not get out of hand and this added to the fun. We hope to return next year and enjoy another camping experience at Ngatuhoa.

ONE PERSON'S ALTERNATIVE TO WORKING ON THE FARM - A NUDIST FARM.

Owing to an early experience with the magazine Health and Efficiency (efficiency seemed to have very little to do with it) I have long had a soft spot for naturism. And there are many practical advantages in farming nudists over farming deer.

Pros: Nudists don't throw you over seven feet of fencing with their enraged antlers when you stand too close to their females. Nudists don't rear up at you and perforate your face with their sharp little cloven feet. Nudists don't suddenly fall over roaring with a breech birth in the middle of the night - and if they do you can just call for an ambulance and go back to bed.

Nudists do not, generally, become so overheated that they sit with their em-purpled swollen testicles in a water trough to cool them off.

Cons: Not all nudists look like Michelle Pfeiffer. The central forelimb of male nudists has no business being permanently on display during an economic recession. (Thanks to Sunday Star)

URETITI EASTER CAMP. (Uretiti Recreation Reserve) Our Xmas camp was enjoyed by all with many members joining us. We lived on fresh and smoked mullet and tuatuas. (The spa pool worked OK.) We gained several new members and hope to see more of them. Hi to Wellington, Palmerston North and Feilding; we hope you had a safe trip home. What interest is there in holding a nude golfing day at the adjoining course or other competitions on the beach or in the camp? We could make enquiries and see the local news media but, we need your suggestions now, not during the holiday period. The local newspaper and radio do advertise days to go to Uretiti for those who cannot afford clothes.

Our Easter camp will be held from Friday 1 7 - Monday 20 April. High tides will be in the morning.

From State Highway 1 , 6 km north of Waipu arid 1 km north of the golf course, turn right into Uretiti Beach Recreation Reserve camping ground. Water taps, flush toilets, cold showers. NO DOGS. Supplies at Ruakaka, 3 km further north. Contact John or Fran on 576 5219 for further information. Present camping charge is $5 per per adult per night.

BEACH DAYS  The popularity of some beaches for nude recreation may change. St Leonards is handy to central Auckland and is always popular but room is often limited at the highest tides. Often on fine days hundreds of nudists enjoy this beach.

FREE BEACH GROUP INC

New Plymouth Newsletter - March 1992

ALL SUNDAYS: TAPUAE BEACH

This month we have no special event organised, just the usual sunbathing at Tapuae Beach. There are five Sundays this month. Surely, some of them will be fine and sunny! Although the state of the tide is not important at Tapuae, some of you may be interested in the tides for March:

Sunday 1: high 8.55am, low 3.12pm.

Sunday 8: high 12.52pm, low 7.11 pm.

Sunday 15: high 7.37am, low 1 .56pm.

Sunday 22:high 1.02pm, low 7.19pm.

Sunday 29: high 725am, low 1.51 pm.

We don't seem to have had a real summer yet, at least not during the weekends. Perhaps March will bring a few fine Sundays. One can only hope for the best.

NEW ORGANISER NEEDED FOR NEXT SUMMER

Since Doug and Peggy will not be available to organise FBG in New Plymouth next summer, we will need a new person or couple to be the local contact(s). Please give this serious consideration and if you think you can spare the time, volunteer your services to the FBG Committee as soon as possible.

PAPAMOA UPDATE

A member writes from Mount Maunganui: Way back in the early forties that area of land which backs on to the Free Beach was taken over by the Government for use as a rifle range for defence purposes. A couple of years or so ago the Waiting Tribunal gave back the land to the Maori owners. Shortly after the Mount Maunganui Council and the Papamoa area were amalgamated with the Tauranga District Council, the Council erected signs on the beach indicating the area that is generally regarded as the Nude Beach. These signs remained in place for some time. The sign on the South end of the beach was vandalised first. Following publicity about the Free Beach some person who claimed to be 'one of the owners' claimed that the owners had the signs removed by the Council. I find this difficult to believe as I seem to remember the Council stating that their policy on dress standards are not a Council matter but a Police one.

Anyway at this time the area of land on the south end of this beach has been developed for building purposes, The owners have fenced in the old car park and left a walkway alongside the new subdivision. I have nut heard of anyone being asked to leave the beach. Recently most folk seem to be parking up nearer the Northern end of the beach and seem to be congregating further up the beach. On fine weekend days there seem to be a reasonable number of people there. It seems to me that as long as no one rocks the boat we should be all right for a while, although the locals feel that it is inevitable that eventually we will be built out and unless there is a change in public attitude to nudism, we may have to find somewhere else to congregate. F.B.G. Members at Riverlands Hide-away Resort

Tucked away in a delightfully secluded valley a few kilometres along an unsealed country road from the Napier-Taupo State Highway 5 is a Complex billed as the North Island's only "clothes optional" Resort. In January some F.B.G. members from the Wellington region briefly stayed at Riverlands to sus out the place as a possible venue for F.B.G. gatherings and nudist activities generally. The consensus of opinion was that the as yet unfinished Complex was potentially a splendid haven for those whose enjoyment of the great out-doors is enhanced by being naked. Although the facilities are not yet complete the standard of those already available is good. We stayed in cabin units which are fairly basic, but comfortable. The kitchen/dining room (the only non-nudity area) offers all cooking and eating facilities including fridges and freezers. Camping facilities are still to be developed but the area set aside provides semi-sheltered sites amongst Low scrub brush and promises to be a delightful area. We did not have time to explore the extensive farm and forest lands surrounding the hide-away Complex, nor to participate in the outback adventures such as horse trekking and white water rafting. (Both non-nudist activities, of course.) But we did enjoy a sunny day swimming in the clear, fresh but surprisingly warm pool of the Mohaka River and sunbathing on sandy beaches.

Two points should be made about Riverlands; one of the rules posted up inside the kitchen asks nudists to be considerate of non-nudists. This really begs clarification by Management. During our stay most of the guests were apparently not nudists, which was an inhibiting factor against us being nude around the Complex area while they were present. If this is to be promoted as a clothes optional Resort why should the onus be on nudists to be considerate of (the feelings?) of non-nudists? Shouldn't it be up to the clothed guests to accept those who wish to be nude? Perhaps Management intends another interpretation of this rule. Secondly while Management extended us a very warm and friendly welcome, it could be good public relations for them to offer F.B.G. Members and other members a discounted tariff at least until the Complex facilities are fully completed. We can unreservedly say that Riverlands offers F.B.G. Members a marvellous opportunity to commune with nature "au naturel".

Ngatuhoa: "...going back again next year."

Having had to commit myself to long hours in my shop leading up to Christmas, I had been unable to get out and enjoy what little summer there has been, let alone join in on any Free Beach Group activities. It was from this background that I had been greatly looking forward to my first Ngatuhoa weekend.

Not one to let locked gates stop me I arrived early Saturday afternoon after an enjoyable tramp. What I found was not to disappoint me. I walked no more than 10 metres in the gate and Fern (until then a complete stranger) thrust a cold Coke into my hands to refresh me from my walk.

So began the most relaxing time I have had in a very long time. Briefly described it would be "fun times, friendly new faces, volley ball, peace and quite, cold refreshing river baths (optional extra), bush walks, freedom." I for one will be making sure I'm back again next year.

Please contact Marilyn (Wellington 564-6672) if you are coming to Rangi Woods.

Best to phone first, rather than just turn up at the gate.

Can we be Complacent?

The latest news from Sydney is not good. The State Authorities have passed control of the beaches to local Councils. Nudists at Lady Jane Beach have until August to convince the Council to stay with the status quo rather than accept current pressure to ban nude sun bathing.

Closer to home we have heard of the encroachment of residential housing at Papamoa and the associated problems of access to the beach. In Wellington the Army has vacated Fort Dorset, and this land is likely to become an up-market subdivision overlooking Breaker Bay (Wellington's nude beach). Who said the Free Beach Group has achieved its goal? What has been won has got to be defended.

Things are so desperate we are sending Geoff, our roving reporter, to Australia to investigate!
