Dear Friends,

At the most recent committee meeting a question was raised "what is the Free Beach Group?" The best answer given was "a disseminator of information". A posh way to say most people join for the beach list. I couldn't help but wonder whether this was in actual fact the case. Do people join just for the beach lists or is it in the hope of getting in touch with, and hopefully becoming friends with, other like minded people who have found the joys and pleasures of feeling the sun, wind and surf on their bodies?

The only way I, and the committee, have of improving on the answer given above is if you tell us. Does this newsletter and the beach list provide you with what you want or would you rather see other, different or additional, information? Perhaps a more personal form of the diary "John Smith and Family plan to go to St. Leonards beach 21st Dec. - anyone wishing to join us please call..." in addition to the beach days. Maybe you would like to see more organised events: additional trips to Waiwera maybe, or perhaps the odd dance. Possibly you would like...

Well, how about it? If there are changes you would like to see or if you have an article that you would like to contribute please let us know and we'll see what we can do for YOU in addition to "just providing information".

I feel I've wittered on about that long enough now and I'll leave you with the good news that I'll be handing over these opening ramblings to one of the other news letter committee members for the next issue.

May Santa Bear be good to you.

Adrianne

BEACH PHOTOS: We are needing photographs of beaches with nudists on them to go with our publicity articles in the N.Z. Naturist. All keen photographers are invited to come to our beach days, and we hope to have a good crowd of members to fill up the middle ground - no close-ups (to avoid the necessity of model release forms) - just a good-sized crowd of Fred Bares to show our enthusiasm.

RESCUE HELICOPTER FUND: The FBG has made a donation of $50.00 towards this worthwhile cause.

FBG ARCHIVES: We would like to set up an archive for the FBG. If you have material which you feel would be of interest (old newsletters for example) or can lend a hand organising or storing this information, please let us know.

ADOPT-A-BEACH: This campaign is still running strong and the more people involved the easier it becomes. We still have forms available if anyone is interested. As nudists we know you don't need reminding but remember "leave only footprints".

DIRECTORY: The 1991 revised edition of the FBG directory will be sent out to those members who have chosen to be in it with the January - February newsletter.

GREAT BARRIER ISLAND: We would still like to know more about the costs and facilities of this island from those who have been there.

SAUNA:

The Sunday night saunas are still going strong. So, come along, say "Open Sesame" and join the crowd.

PLACE:

Alladin's Bathhouse. 433 Richmond Road. Grey Lynn.

TIME:

Every Sunday from 5pm onward.

COST:

$6.50, includes free coffee, tea and fruit drinks.

On Sunday 9th December, we are having a barbecue. BYO food drinks etc. There is a barbecue on the premises and we hope that one or two members will bring in their portable barbecues along with fuel for same.

Alladin's will not shut down over Christmas and you can go there all through the holidays as usual. Hopefully we'll see lots of you there and we would also like to thank the management for their co-operation and hospitality.

Ngatuhoa is our own special hideaway, deep in the bush of the Kaimai Ranges, where we gather every year at the end of January for a week of fun and relaxation.

The Lodge itself is set in a sheltered valley surrounded by native bush and waterfalls, which you can explore along the forestry roads or through bush tracks. The river gives us lots of fun, with swimming, river rafting, canoeing, a pool for high diving, a rope bridge, and even trout fishing. One of the highlights is our Annual Regatta, held on the canal. There is also a flying fox, an absailing cliff, and a rifle range.

Between times you can laze in the sun or play volleyball or FBG cricket. In the evenings we gather in the Lodge to linger over supper, play cards, or watch our own videos. Sometimes we go out to look for glow-worms or try out the Burma Trail. One night we have a Fancy Undress Ball, with prizes for the most ingenious costume. The theme this year will be "Beads and Baubles". On the Monday we head off over to Papamoa Beach for a splash in the briny. Please bring your Fred Bear flags this time, to welcome the ones who can't find us!

The Village Green is for games, sunbathing, and camping. Cars are no longer permitted to drive on this area, and those camping there are asked not to dig holes or ditches around their campsites. Campers who need to cook in the Lodge will be given preference for sites on the Village Green.

The main camping area is across the bridge opposite the canal, where there is a water tap and toilets, but no cooking facilities. Those camping here must make sure they have a torch, or two torches, spare batteries, and a spare bulb.

In order to cater for everybody, it will help if we know how many will be sleeping and/or cooking in the Lodge, and how many will be sleeping and/or cooking in their tents or campervans. Remember, NO CARAVANS can be taken to Ngatuhoa.

PLEASE FILL IN ALL THE DETAILS CAREFULLY ON YOUR BOOKING SLIP.

Sorry, NO DOGS OR CATS may be brought to Ngatuhoa - the rules have been changed.

Note also that there is to be NO SMOKING in the Lodge itself, a safety precaution.

Charles Saggers is offering rides in his minibus, with room for gear. Phone him on 817-5494 to book a seat.

For further information please phone Jim on 09-559-730* & ask for Jim.

South Auckland Newsletter

NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 1990

"Summer is i-cumen in" sang the Britons of the Middle Ages in an atmosphere which was not only much less polluted, but also in a climate much less suited to nudism than ours is.

And Summer is a comin' here, where our climate will be suitable for perhaps the next six months. The newspapers have told us the Ozone hole has appeared a month earlier than usual. This means that while we go about our free beach activities, it behooves us to take all care possible to prevent skin cancer. It's "Slip, Slap, Slop" time again!

Try to choose a beach which has shade as well as sun. Unfortunately, quite a few of our "free" beaches are completely shadeless. This means beach umbrellas or, at the very least, hats and lots of sun screen (preferably at least Factor 15>. Remember, while Polynesians can get skin cancer, it is rare among them but fairly common among those with European ancestry.

Don't forget the meeting on 28th October at 14 Morrow Terrace, Pukekohe to discuss a diary for the South Auckland area.

WELLINGTON  NEWSLETTER

NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 1990

Adrianne, our immediate past secretary wrote recently in a letter to me that "the F.B.G. is the 'school' for nudism" that the nudist movement sun clubs and groups should be places "for learning body-acceptance."

I couldn't agree more. I should like to say that as a Sec. sch. teacher - now retired - I have always endeavoured to read widely educational issues, and from time to time I have jotted down quotable quotes. What one reads at times may seem to be trash but for others some fleeting or even enduring and meaningful value - at least for an aimed at future. The following quote among my many jottings I believe comes into the latter category, and hails from a forward thinking married couple - Drs Phyllis and Eberhard Kronhausen. It relates to the public acceptance of nudity in education. I quote:-

"Even physical education (and here we can reach down to the very young - and not so young children) renders it possible to introduce a certain amount of healthy social nudism in group swimming, gymnastics and other activities out of doors. Contrary to the general fears and prejudices in this connection, such practices, especially introduced early in life, would go a long way toward reducing unhealthy attitudes, false shame, and the now generally prevailing morbid curiosity concerning the nude body." End of quote, and containing food for thought.

On Sat. evening 29th Sept. a small number of alas only male members in the local area were able to make it to the W'ton Sun Club's Woodland Fantasy evening. A great time was had, and the sun club's hospitality was much appreciated.

Chch News

NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 1990

NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 1990

Our group held another swim at Jellie Park pool, which was attended by 35 members and friends. Despite the cooler outside conditions that day, the barbecue was very nice. It was sad only a few stayed for this.

It was great to see Brian of Greymouth here again with us. It would be great to see other visitors come in and enjoy our outings with us - the welcome mat is out!

Arrangements are being made for a day trip to a farm in Scargill. One of our Free Beach members lives on this 30 acre farm and, whilst there is no swimming, there is plenty to keep everyone occupied. There's scope for the children to move about without coming into any harm. Further details of when we can make the trip will be advised when a suitable arrangement can be made.

Members should remember that with the summer days fast approaching, always wear hats and sunscreen as protection against the burning rays of sunshine.

Hopes are that the summer will be fun packed for the families who choose to enjoy the outings that have been arranged for them.
