NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 1989

Hi There Everybody,

The new season is getting away to a really good start, with simply heaps of Yellow Forms stacked up in the mailbox every time I clear it, and a smile on the face of the Treasurer - things were a bit lean there for a while.

IF YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN YOUR SUB, SEND IT IN NOW, or this will be your last newsletter.

* CHRISTMAS PARTY *

We will be having a Christmas Party and Barbecue at the sauna on Sunday 17 December, from 5 p.m. onwards. It will be held on the deck out the back where there is a small swimming pool. BYO and a plate of goodies, also bring your barbecue and some sausages and steaks, and, lots of salad.

We especially invite country members to join us for the weekend - see details in the diary - and we ask local members who can offer billets for our guests to ring Fran on 565-219.

WEDNESDAY   24  JANUARY  TO  TUESDAY  30  JANUARY  1990

If you haven't tried it, you must, and if you have tried it, I know you'll be there again. Our annual get-together at Ngatuhoa is lots of fun and a great way to start the year. You deserve a holiday, and this is it.

No, you won't have to miss the GAMES (we could have our own, of course), but we'll have a TV there, and you can all watch, away from the crowds and the stifling crush in the heat of summer. Cheaper, too.

The Lodge is surrounded by miles of native bush full of birds, with many rivers and streams, waterfalls, diving and swimming holes, weirs, canals and, glow-worms.

There is lots to do, with swimming, canoeing, river rafting, bush walk, flying fox, abseiling, a rifle range (permit required), tramping and trout fishing (get a licence from Rotorua DOC phone 073-479-179). You might also find time for sunbathing or just lazing around.

We make our own fun, too, with our Fancy Undress Ball, games on the Village Green, organised trips to the waterfalls, a regatta, a beach day at Papamoa on the Monday, and indoor games for the evenings. We invite members to send in ideas for the theme for the Fancy Undress Ball, and we'll let you know what it's to be in our next newsletter.

All the details and your booking slip are given on a separate sheet with this newsletter, so you've plenty of time to plan your week or weekend with us in the bush. PLEASE BOOK EARLY.

PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY - THERE ARE SOME CHANGES

COUNTRY CORNER

Thank you for all your lovely letters, the enthusiasm out there is just great. Our local organisers have all been busy, and I am pleased. to present our first newsletter and diary for another city. Good one, Mainlanders!

The Wellington Swim Night was a great success, and will be followed up with another evening on 15 October, probably too late for this newsletter, but I hope you all enjoy yourselves, and get LOTS of people to come.

Frank Peek has sent us an account of the first swim night:

WELLINGTON SWIM NIGHT

Sunday 10 September was a exciting day for Wellington members of the Free Beach Group, with the first swim night of the Wellington Sun Club, organised by NZNF President June Campbell—Tong.

Our local organiser Bill Baine warmly invited us to rendezvous during the afternoon at his home in Eastbourne. For those of us who could make it, this gave us the opportunity to meet and share ideas. We then proceeded in convoy to the Porirua East Aquatic Centre, no longer feeling like isolated individuals. We were delighted that members came from as far afield as Masterton, certainly an encouraging sign for the future.

So, off we went to the Aquatic Centre, which is very easy to find, simply by following the signs as one leaves the motorway and turns into Porirua East. A friendly welcome was extended to us all by June Campbell-Tong. With children entering at no charge, and adults paying only $3, we reflected on how inexpensive this wholesome recreation was, in comparison to the fees that one pays for practically anything else.

The Aquatic Centre was an ideal venue, with a full-size heated pool and a toddlers' pool, complete with kayaks, ropes, sprinklers and all sorts of inflatable tubes that can give tremendous fun to anyone daring enough to try and stay on them - and tremendous entertainment to those who prefer to watch.

With indoor barbecue facilities there was every opportunity for a great way to spend a Sunday evening. Forty adults were able to come, with about ten children, which were sufficient numbers to ensure that the evenings continue, even if the fee is raised to $4 - those who were there would be happy to pay more.

For some, it was their first experience of social nudity, having merely been private nudists at home. For the first-timers, it was immediately obvious that family social nudity is something completely natural and honest; we were nude, but by no means lewd; and, all in all, it is a sheer normal, natural and healthy way of being.

We left the pool feeling that, at last, something is being done in the Wellington area. This is a great initiative by June Campbell-Tong, whom we thank very much indeed. We all look forward to the next swim night, and hope our members will bring as many friends as possible.

Thank you, Frank.

We now have eight members living in Rotorua, and it would be nice if you could find a local spot to meet - a beach at one of your lakes, perhaps? There is also ample opportunity in Rotorua for private spa pools. If someone would like to suss out a suitable venue, you could all meet, say, once a month, and share the cost. Would anyone step forward and offer to be local organiser for this area?

Tauranga members are reminded of your swim nights at Fernland Spa, on the first Friday of each month at 10 p.m. This is open to all sun club members and genuine nudists. David is planning beach days at Papamoa over the summer, and of course, we expect to see all of you at Ngatuhoa. More news next time.

Folks around New Plymouth can also expect to see a fair bit of FBG publicity, with plans for beach days, sports days, tramping trips and other events in the pipeline. So do urge all your friends to get with it and join us NOW.

And to all those members tucked away by themselves in odd corners of the country, I send my special good wishes. Your loyal support for free beaches keeps me going. Please keep in touch.

MISSING TOWELS

If you find you have gone home from the sauna with a towel that doesn't belong to you, please don't be embarrassed about returning it. We know our towels are all the same, and can understand mistakes. But some of us can't afford to replace them. Thanks.

MEMBER'S REQUEST

Would anyone have a spare berth in a caravan at the NZNF Rally in Wellington? Will share expenses. If you can help, ring Fran 565—219.

HAWAIIAN TOURS

One of our members is involved in organising sightseeing tours to Hawaii. Two departure dates on 26 December 1989 and 3 January 1990. The tours include visits to free beaches. For further information, please write TCI Educational Tour, c/o P.O. Box 28-037, Wellington 5, or phone WN 04-666-189.

WELLINGTON DISTRICT DIARY

12.11.89 SECOND SUNDAY IN NOVEMBER - FIRST BEACH DAY AT PEKAPEKA

From State Highway 1, 4 km north of Waikanae, turn west at the sign to Pekapeka, go l½ km to the end of Pekapeka Road., across the cross-roads to the oar park. Walk along the beach and across a stream 1 km NORTH.

19.11.89 THIRD SUNDAY IN NOVEMBER - THIRD AND FINAL 1989 "SWIM NIGHT" at Porirua.

Held at the Aquatic Centre, Bedford Street, Porirua East. Barbecue facilities "on tap". Admission $4, school students FREE. FBG members and friends welcome. Sun Club invited.

2.12.89 FIRST SATURDAY IN DECEMBER - A DATE SET ASIDE FOR VISITING & ASSESSING
FITZROY BAY and LAKE KOHANGATERA LOCALITY

A remote area inaccessible to road traffic between Baring Head Lighthouse and. Pencarrow Lighthouse. This coastal and wild lake district has been one of Bill's favourite haunts for years. Given sunshine and a light sea breeze this vast natural beautiful area is excellent for nude abandonment; swimming in flat Cook Strait conditions; sun bathing; coastal and. lake edge walks; and above all acres of high and low grass and. bush-covered hills to roam over and explore. Some interesting history.

THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO GET THERE:-

(1) By road to car park by bridge associated with locked vehicular access road to Baring Head Lighthouse east of the southern end. of Wainuiomata Coast Road. Walk over the bridge and. up the lighthouse access road, over the saddle ridge, then take the turn off to the right down onto coastal track/road, then proceed. NORTH along this metal road to sand-dune rendezvous some 10 minutes' walk further north of a small stream and obvious coastal grove of Karaka trees on your right.

(2) Second route to get there is from the south end. of Eastbourne's main road (Muritai Road). Proceed south on coast road beyond locked gate on push-bike! (Cleared bikes are usually available at weekends from bike hire business near gate - alas no bikes have carriers so a day back-pack is needed for food and drink.) To be true, a fair bike ride, but given calm, or later in the day fine light-southerly variable conditions - Wellington's arguably best summer weather, the effort can be well worth it. Often clothes can be dispensed. with en route south of Pencarrow Headland. Biking in the nude can be exhilarating! When approaching the Fitzroy Bay rendezvous from Eastbourne it will be found out on the beach some ½ doz chains (100m? - Ed) south of what remains of the Piaka, a vessel wrecked nearby in 1906; it is erected. alongside the coast road a little south of a shingle quarry worked only on weekdays.

N.B. The same rendezvous and information applies to the FIRST SATURDAY IN JANUARY - see 6.1.90 - so one can have 'two bites at the cherry' if they wish - one in December, and one in January.

If the Saturday/s in question are unsuitable weather-wise, then, fingers crossed, the following day/s - the Sunday/s, can suffice instead. And if conditions for the Fitzroy Bay locality on the respective Sunday/s are still unsuitable, then maybe local conditions at No. 265A Muritai Road (main road), Eastbourne - Bill's private address - could provide a sheltered alternative with clothes-optional facilities, sun bathing and miniature croquet being available, with textile beach swimming two minutes' walk from the front gate.

For decisions arrived at regarding the FIRST SATURDAYS AND/OR SUNDAYS IN DECEMBER AND JANUARY, ring Bill between 8 and 9 a.m. on the days in question, phone (04)628-514.

10.12.89 SECOND SUNDAY IN DECEMBER - SECOND BEACH DAY AT PEKAPEKA

For directions, see the entry for 12.11.89. If this second Sunday in December be considered unsuitable weather-wise, then, fingers crossed, the following Sunday - the THIRD SUNDAY IN DECEMBER proves O.K.? For decisions arrived at in this regard ring Bill (04)628-514 OR:- Geoffrey (058)35-192 between 8 and 9 a.m. on the day in question.

23.12.89 FOURTH SATURDAY IN DECEMBER "QUESTION MARKED" for SOUTH RIVERSDALE BEACH

Out east from Masterton. There are a number of FBG members in the Wairarapa, and this east coast locality, not as yet on the FBG Beach List, is believed to be worthy of at least one 'official' visit this summer by FBG members.

N.B. The W'gton local contact - Bill - is a starter and could have 3 to 4 seats in his car. Wairarapa members, this could be your big day, and for all a happy pre Xmas 'DO'.

14. 1.90 SECOND SUNDAY IN JANUARY - THIRD BEACH DAY AT PEKAPEKA

For details see the entry for 12.11.89. If this third Sunday in January is unsuitable, ring Bill (04)628-514 or Geoffrey (058)35-192 between 8 and 9 a.m. for information.

20. 1.90 ?? IDEAS PLEASE. (Yes. How about Christmas Bay, a sheltered little bay to the south of Castlepoint Beach. 15 minute walk straight up and over the hill to the south of The Gap. OR Whatarangi, also Dee Dees and Ning Nong - all these are surfing beaches accessed from Martinborough - Adrianne)

To all Wellington District members,

How is this for starters? Remember to take everything you need when you go to the beach - some of the places we go to are fairly isolated. Take drink, lunch, sun-hat and towel, suntan lotion and maybe insect repellent. Also, TAKE YOUR FLAG, so that you can find each other.

I am planning to go to the NZNF AGM on 28 December, and will spend some time cruising around the local beaches while I am in the area, so I might meet up with some of you.

My suggestions for Wairarapa venues, for 20.1.90, come out of another beach list called "The New Zealand Surfing Guide" by Mike Bhana, which I found on the shelf at the local library. Some of you may already know these beaches, or may be tempted to do a little exploring.

By the way, this newsletter is all Bill's work - I am only the typist And I hope to suss out your lake, Bill, it sounds just like my kind of place.

Look forward to meeting you all.

WELLINGTON DISTRICT

For too many years the Wellington/lower North Island members of the Free Beach Group have, in the main, gone it alone. Not really since the mid to late 1970's have opportunities been arranged for FBG members to socialise in the open and elsewhere.

For years our fellow members of the Free Beach Group in greater Auckland have socialised at appropriate outdoor and indoor places, summer and winter, almost every week throughout the year.

A number of Wellington members will recall a well-structured questionnaire prepared and sent out by one of our local members, Grant Pepper, towards the end of last summer. With opportunities these last two months for some of us Wellingtonians to chat at the 'SWIM NIGHTS' at Porirua East Aquatic Centre, we agree that individualism on the part of local members should be respected, but that with a new beach season getting underway, an arranged Wellington Diary of social opportunities for interested members and their friends should henceforth be re-established regularly throughout the year. This initiative has the unconditional support of "headquarters" up north, fronted by our indomitable (!) Secretary, Adrianne.

So the "SWEET SIXTEEN WEEKS OF HIGH SUMMER" have been programmed and a copy is printed overleaf.

It will be noted a monthly regular BEACH DAY at Pekapeka is planned for the SECOND SUNDAY OF EACH MONTH OF HIGH SUMMER. The THIRD SUNDAY is also set down for Pekapeka should the second Sunday in the month prove inclement. To find out if this fixture has had to be postponed, phone Bill on (04)628-514, or with discretion, Geoffrey at Waikanae (058)35-192* between 8 and 9 a.m. on the day in question.

Other fixtures and venues planned and proposed are detailed in the Wellington Diary and entered on the 'Easyfind Calendar'. These are variable and not organised on a monthly pattern. Please note there are some question marks on the 'Easyfind', and also a number of Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays not ear-marked. If anybody has suggestions for these days, I'll see you at Pekapeka on 12 November. Auckland and Christchurch have full calendars.

DON'T MISS OUT ON THE EXTRA AND FINAL SWIM NIGHT FOR 1989.

See the Diary entry for SUNDAY 19 NOVEMBER. These excellent swim nights at the Aquatic Centre in Porirua East are arranged by June Campbell-Tong, President of the N.Z. Nudist Federation. They have proved a great success, and June intends reinstating them in April and having them on a regular timetable throughout next year.

FOOTNOTE: Palmerston North members are reminded that Pekapeka Beach is not all that far away - we expect to see you there!

Bill

CHRISTCHURCH NEWSLETTER

Fourteen of us gathered at Gerald and Sue's place for the first of what we hope will be many a good get-together of the Christchurch Free Beach Group. We're putting posters all over the place and feel that the free beach idea will really catch on this summer.

Bill and Marlene who have recently been to Europe told us how being part of the European community has affected British attitudes to nudity. More of that later.

We pooled all our information and ideas and came up with a number of plans for summer and winter venues. Many of these ideas are yet to be explored.

In the meantime we decided to begin with a regular four-weekly programme of beach trips, but we are cooking up future plans for other outings, holidays and social gatherings all the year round.

Speaking of cooking, we also had a discussion on the depletion of the ozone layer and the need to protect ourselves, and children in particular, from the fierce rays of the sun which we get down here in the Mainland. Investment in a beach umbrella is recommended.

Saturday was chosen for outings instead of Sunday for these reasons:

(1) All parents present agreed that it is hectic getting children home on a Sunday evening and preparing for school next day;

(2) There are fewer people on the beach on a Saturday;

(3) If the weather is bad on the Saturday, the outing will take place on the Sunday.

Since we are a small group (at present!) we agreed to have a list of each others' names and phone numbers for impromptu arrangements - this is enclosed.

Free   Beach   Etiquette

MANY PEOPLE will insist that rules for proper behaviour are not necessary since any decent or intelligent person should know how to act. On the other hand, naturist organizations constantly contact familiarised individuals. We want to leave no doubt as to what kind of people are advocates of clothes- optional recreation! Yes, naturists are nice people and we aim to keep it that way!

o STAY OUT OF DUNES and other environmentally sensitive areas.

o OBEY PARKING REGULATIONS and other posted rules.

o HELP WITH LITTER by bringing along a trash bag. Carry out more than you brought in.

o DON'T GO OUT OF ESTABLISHED NUDE AREAS. To wander nude into a clothed beach or parking area will offend many. It undermines our objectives.

o NO OVERT SEXUAL ACTIVITY. Leave exhibitionism to those attending clothed beaches. Nude is not lewd, but combined with sex, undermines our image.

o RESPECT THE PROPERTY OF OTHERS.

o ASK PRIOR CONSENT FOR PHOTOGRAPHY. People can't legally be stopped from taking pictures in public places. However, asking permission is common courtesy. Not everyone wants to end up in a stranger's photo album. Parents should also be asked before children are photographed.

o PRIVACY IS FUNDAMENTAL! Beach Romeos are those males who can't take "No, I would like to be left alone" for an answer. Single women aren't always waiting for men to approach them. Many are at the beach for quiet time and don't want to be disturbed. It is not wrong for a man to go to the beach to meet women - but it is rude when he monopolizes a woman's time when the welcome mat was never put out.

o COME PREPARED. Bring beach supplies: beverage, food, chair, sunscreen and towel. Don't expect others to share these items. Mooching is offensive.

o SPEAK UP FOR STANDARDS. If a person seems unaware of beach etiquette, explain it, kindly and plainly. Give them a copy of "Free Beach Etiquette." Don't let uncouth individuals ruin our fragile and beautiful place under the sun!
